As Radziszewski explains in the editorial: "Returning with this Ukraine issue is obviously no random choice: Russia's full-scale invasion launched on February 24, 2022, and the war that's been waged there since 2014 set an imposing context. History-being aware or unaware of it, writing, rewriting, manipulating it-seems a crucial backdrop in the conflict. Perhaps perversely, history is what we've concentrated on here, in our work "for the future." In our own queer way, naturally.Ukraine's present queer scene is vibrant and varied, with nonbinary and trans individuals as well as non-hetero-normative female artists making their voices heard at last. It would take at least two such issues or a voluminous album to cover this phenomenon in depth. We therefore decided to delve into faggot archaeology in particular, and focus mainly on traces of history. We chose to collect dispersed materials from previous journeys and to revisit DIKs first Ukrainian issue, released in 2006. What did we find then in Kyiv? What's changed? Our further aims here are to show alternative visions of masculinity, including in the context of the current war. Issue nr. 8 brings together a trove of stories and a series of hard-hitting collaborations including Bruce LaBruce, Nan Goldin and Wolfgang Tillmans, but with a strong focus on past and roots.
