Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Jurgen Schadeberg was born in Berlin in 1931 and while still in his teens, worked as an apprentice photographer for a German press agency in Hamburg. In 1950 he immigrated to South Africa and became Chief Photographer, Picture Editor and Art Director of Drum magazine. Since then he has been working in an about South Africa, capturing pivotal images on film. This book is a visual exploration of the unique social landscape in South Africa during the nineteen fifties. When Jurgen Schadeberg arrived in South Africa in 1950 from Germany, he found two societies running parallel to each other: the black and the white. The Black and White Fifties is the result of an outsider's perspective on the strangely and unnaturally separated yet fascinatingly energetic environment of apartheid South Africa.
