Pauline Viardot war als Künstlerin in Deutschland, Frankreich, Russland, Großbritannien und Irland aktiv und kann zweifellos als Kulturbotschafterin Europas gelten. Sie war mit Clara und Robert Schumann sowie Frédéric Chopin und George Sand befreundet. Als Komponistin wie auch als Interpretin wurde sie zur Mitschaffenden von Meyerbeer, Gounod, Berlioz, Fauré u.v.a. Vor allem engagierte sie sich zudem für russische Musik und Literatur. Julius Rietz wurde als Nachfolger seines Freundes Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Leiter des Gewandhausorchesters in Leipzig. Er stand für eine spezifisch deutsche Instrumentalmusik. Kennengelernt haben sich Pauline Viardot und Julius Rietz 1858 im Rahmen eines gemeinsamen Konzerts in Leipzig. Zwischen 1858 und 1874 schrieben sie sich zeitweise täglich. Eine Liebesgeschichte auf Papier? Ihre Briefe erlauben nicht nur einen Einblick in ihr Seelenleben, sondern auch in ihre musikalische Werkstatt, in ihre Arbeitsweisen und Musikpraxen. Der umfangreich kommentierte Band stellt das erhaltene Briefmaterial vor, liefert deutsche Übersetzungen der zum Teil in französischer Sprache verfassten Briefe und bezieht auch bisher unveröffentlichtes Brief- und Notenmaterial sowie die Tagebücher von Julius Rietz mit ein. Pauline Viardot, née Garcia (18211910) and Julius Rietz (18121877) had a significant influence on the cultural life of their age. Pauline Viardot was active as an artiste in Germany, France, Russia, Britain and Ireland, and can undoubtedly be seen as a cultural ambassador in Europe. She was friends with Clara and Robert Schumann and with Frédéric Chopin und George Sand. She collaborated as both composer and performer with Meyerbeer, Gounod, Berlioz, Fauré and many others, and she was an advocate of Russian music and literature. Julius Rietz succeeded his friend Felix Mendelssohn as conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig. He represented a specifically German tradition of instrumental music. Pauline Viardot and Julius Rietz first met in 1858 at a shared concert in Leipzig. Between 1858 and 1874 they wrote to each other regularly, sometimes every day. Their letters offer an insight not only into their inner lives but also into their musical workshop, their working methods and musical practice. This richly-annotated volume presents the surviving correspondence, with German translations for those letters originally written in French, and also included previously unpublished letters and scores and the diaries of Julius Rietz.
