Originally published in the 1880s, they are brought to life for new generations here with the spectacular, full-color illustrations of Golden Age book artist Milo Winter, together with a new Introduction by the author's daughter-in-law that describes his boyhood & the background of the stories. In 62 pages + Frontispiece + 11 internal plates by Winter, complemented by smaller pen-&-ink sketches opening each story. Hardcover (small 4to, 7.25" x 9.5") has bright orange-red cloth-covered boards stamped with black lettering to front & spine. Condition is VG: very clean, with light exterior soil/spotting to spine & lower front board. Interior pages are very clean & bright, with a random smudge or two. Frontispiece & title page show heavier foxed spots. All plates virtually flawless with lightly tanned margins & an occasional shallow crease to upper-outer corner, matched by bumping to outer-upper corners of both boards. Binding strong & straight, pages lightly tanned but completely unmarked save for old gift inscription dated Xmas 1946 to ffep. No DJ. Pages are very clean and intact except for light age toning and a few smudges limited to edges of text block. Covers are very clean and intact except for the fading to spinal lettering and slight wear to extremities. A Very Good copy. The first biography of Joel Chandler Harris (1848-1908), an American author and journalist who is perhaps best-known for his Uncle Remus stories and character of Brer Rabbit. The text from some of Joel's letters are also printed herein. Authored by Julia Collier Harris (1875-1967), an American author and journalist. Julia was Joel's daughter-in-law; she married one of Joel's sons, Julian LaRose Harris. Julia's biography provides a comprehensive overview of Joel's life and career. In the opening chapters, she discusses Joel's birthplace and early childhood and then proceeds to describe his life in an approximately chronological manner. Brief mention is given of Joel's time spent working at Joseph Addison Turner's Turnwold Plantation where he befriended many of the African-American slaves there, including Uncle George Terrell, Old Harbert, and Aunt Crissy, and gained a literary education by reading from Turner's library. The African folktales Joel heard from the slaves at Turnwold Plantation were a major source of inspiration for his Uncle Remus stories.
