Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In twelfth century Languedoc a subversive heresy of Eastern origin flourished to an extraordinary degree. The Albigenses believed that the world was created by an evil spirit, and that all worldly things - including the Church - were by nature sinful.Jonathan Sumption's acclaimed history examines the roots of the heresy, the uniquely rich culture of the region which nurtured it, and the crusade launched against it by the Church which resulted in one of the most savage of all medieval wars. Eight centuries ago was not part of France. The principality on the Mediterranean, ruled by the house of Toulouse, seemed far apart from the world of the feudal north. It was here that a heresy of eastern origin challenged the orthodoxy of Catholicism. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.

Index. Minor edge soiling. Jonathan Philip Chadwick Sumption, Lord Sumption, OBE, PC, FSA, FRHistS (born 9 December 1948), is a medieval historian and former senior judge who sat on the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom between 2012 and 2018. Sumption was sworn in as a Justice of the Supreme Court on 11 January 2012, succeeding Baron Collins of Mapesbury. Exceptionally, he was appointed to the Supreme Court directly from the practicing Bar, without having been a full-time judge. He retired from the Supreme Court on 9 December 2018 upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70. Sumption is well known for his role as a barrister in many legal cases. They include appearances in the Hutton Inquiry on HM Government's behalf, in the Three Rivers case, his representation of former Cabinet Minister Stephen Byers and the Department for Transport in the Railtrack private shareholders' action against the British Government in 2005, for defending HM Government in an appeal hearing brought by Binyam Mohamed, and for successfully defending Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich in a private lawsuit brought by Boris Berezovsky. A former academic, Sumption was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2003 New Year Honours and is also known for writing a substantial narrative history of the Hundred Years' War, so far in five volumes. Sumption has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (FRHistS) and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London (FSA). A succession of catastrophes in the middle years of the fourteenth century brought France to the brink of destruction. The bankruptcy of the French state and a bitter civil war within the royal family were followed by the defeat and capture of the King of France by the Black Prince at Poitiers. A peasant revolt and a violent revolution in Paris completed the tragedy. In a humiliating treaty of partition France ceded more than a third of its territory to Edward III of England. Not for sixty years would the English again come so close to total victory. France's great cities, provincial towns and rural communities resisted where its leaders failed. They withstood the sustained savagery of the soldiers and the free companies of brigands to undo most of Edward III's work in the following generation. England's triumphs proved to be brittle and short-lived. There is a substantial chapter on War in Scotland, 1331-1335 (pages 123-151). First Paperback Edition [stated], First Printing [Stated].

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Covers after The Bibliotheque Nationale (illustrator). 1st Edition. First softcover edition, first impression. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of book and spine, spine uncreased, scratch to centre front cover, slight browning to page block, no inscriptions, overall, book looks to have been lightly and carefully used. 639pp. Jonathan Sumption's multi volume, narrative history of The Hundred Years War between England and France, has been widely praised as 'earning a place alongside Sir Steven Runciman's A History of the Crusades' according to Frederic Raphael. This is the first volume in a series that details the long and violent endeavour of the English to dismember Europe's strongest state, a succession of wars that is one of the seminal chapters in European history. Beginning with the funeral of Charles IV of France in 1328, it follows the Hundred Years War up to the surrender of Calais in 1347. It traces the early humiliations and triumphs of Edward III: the campaigns of Sluys, Crecy and Calais, which first made his name as a war leader and the reputation of his subjects as the most brutally effective warriors of their time. A scarce classic.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression [2], 130pp. Cream publisher's cloth-covered boards, gilt-stamped lettering on the spine. 8vo. Cloth a little rounded at spine tips and corners. Upper text block edge speckled with dust spots. Internally neat, clean, fresh and tight. In its original dust wrapper, not price clipped, gently bumped on extreme edges, a little sunned over spine, with a couple of small & mild marks. Sir Keith Joseph (1918-1994) - a British conservative Member of Parliament who served in the Governments of four prime ministers was a key influence in the creation of Thatcherism and key adviser to Margaret Thatcher. In this, one of his most influential publications, he and his co-author argue that the fundamental error of egalitarianism is the support that class has anything to do with material wealth and that class distinctions are cultural rather than economic, and hence that equality cannot be achieved or even enhanced by breaking down income differences. Although heavily criticised at the time of publication as poorly written and weakly argued, it was of profound influence those favouring Christian democracy coupled with a free market economy and on the development of public policies under Thatcherism. An important work.

First edition. 130 pages. With a typed signed letter from Joseph dated 30th August 1985 on Department of Education and Science headed notepaper pasted to the front endpaper and the envelope it arrived in to the pastedown opposite, and a pasted in signed dedication on House of Commons headed paper of the same date to the half-title page, and another loosely inserted handwritten note dated two days earlier. The recipient of the letter was Norman Hazell MBE, former Councillor and Mayor of Wakefield, who twice ran as the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Wakefield in 1983 and 1987, Joseph's letter making reference to his narrow margin of defeat in 1983, the pasted in dedication is to Norman's son, Christopher Hazell. The book is firmly bound in slightly marked, bumped and rubbed cream-coloured boards, lettered in gilt to the spine. The text block is slightly toned, marked and foxed. The dust jacket is the original and not price clipped, it is slightly marked and rubbed with fading to the spine, also some minor nicks and creasing to the edges. A right-wing critique of the concept of equality written by one of the architects of Thatcherism shortly before the Conservative's victory in the 1979 General Election, with some well-provenanced signed notes and letters to one of his colleagues.
