"Birds of Malawi consists of two main parts: the first contains full descriptions, colour paintings by Kenneth Newman and accurate distribution maps of the 74 species that occur in Malawi but are not described in Newman's Birds of Southern Africa; the second part is a checklist of all birds recorded in Malawi which includes information about the status, range and habitat preference of each species." Even now, this is the only guidebook devoted to Malawi's birds providing illustrations of those species not covered in books on birds found south of the Zambesi and Kunene rivers.
