Boards rubbed with spots of abrasion particularly along board edges with board corners worn; shallow chipping at spine heel and head of front joint; vertical scuffing lengthwise along joints; spine decorated with five fractionally raised bands with gilt tooled compartments; spine's dark brown title label has fractional chipping at right and left edges but retains "Pope." in bright gilt. Text block edges toned with original marbling quite faded along with scuffs and negligibly shallow nicking; leaves worn at their bottom fore-edge corners; several leaves slightly pulled resulting in shallow wear at their top edges and fore-edges. Blue marbled endpapers; some pencil writing as well as antiquarian six-line ink gift inscription to Miss A.M. McCall from L.G. Tompkins dated Jan. 1836 on front flyleaf with ink carrying through several adjoining leaves; similar pencil inscription on second flyleaf; pencil signature "John G. Smith" at top of frontispiece's blank recto; three eye pencil doodles on pictorial title page; yet another pencil inscription (Miss Belle Meytes?) at top of text title page; "Miss McCall" in antiquarian ink on rear free endpaper recto; moisture stains at margins (particularly gutters) of early and late leaves diminishing inward; foxing/toning strongest on early leaves but with mostly light occurrences to interior pages; tear to bottom fore-edge corner of pages 473-474; some scattered soiling, corner creases, etc. Age-toned newspaper clipping circa 1882 laid-in between pages 192-193. Binding is firm. Double-column text. Opposite unpaged b/w frontispiece portrait of Alexander Pope is unpaged b/w pictorial title - "The Poetical Works of Alexander Pope, Esqr. Including his Translation of Homer. Complete in One Volume. With the Life of the Author, by Dr. Johnson." which differs from the text title page - "The Poetical Works of Alexander Pope, Esq. To Which Is Prefixed the Life of the Author, By Dr. Johnson." Pages iii-xlii feature Samuel Johnson's THE LIFE OF ALEXANDER POPE, ESQ. Pages 43-208 are a collection of Pope's POETICAL WORKS including Pastorals, An Essay on Criticism, The Rape of the Lock, The Temple of Fame, Thebais of Statius, Essay on Man, Moral Essays, Epistle to Dr. Arbuthnot, The Satires of Dr. John Donne, Epilogue to the Satires, The Dunciad, etc. Pages 209-363 are THE ILIAD OF HOMER translated by Alexander Pope.
