Hardcover. Condition: Good. Compiled from the writings and artworks of Howard Pyle by Merle Johnson. Originally published 1921, this is a later printing with Harper's date code 'H-W' at copyright page; this code can refer to an August 1922 printing, but 1922-era printings of this book appear to have had MCMXXI at the title page, additional plates called for, and bibliographic captions to the illustration plates, which detailed the publications that those artworks originally appeared in. This copy lacks these points of issue, and so is most likely a printing from after Harper began recycling date codes, which would date this copy to August 1947. Black cloth with gilt spine titling and decoration, illustrated title plate at front panel. Light shelf-wear, light fading to spine, moderate rubbing to spine with most of the gilt rubbed away. Spine square. Binding sound. No jacket. Bookplate at front paste down, and faint remnant of another that has been removed. Interior else clean, pages lightly toned, text unmarked. With thirteen illustration plates in black-and-white and full-color; all plates present.

First Edition
Pyle, Howard (illustrator). This is the rare oversized first edition, which first appeared in 1921, of "Howard Pyle's Book of Pirates". It's a 1930 printing of this edition, which has an extra story and about 70 additional illustrations that are missing from the other editions, which is what makes this edition particularly sought after. Plus the pictures and text are in the public domain, so they're free to use. The book's large size provides higher quality images. Howard Pyle was one of the great illustrators of his time and this book is the source of many of the best pirate images out there. You often see them on other pirate book covers, ads, and posters. I used one on the cover of my book "Captured by Pirates". Aside from the expected age tanning of the paper, the interior is in near fine condition. The cover has some visible wear and aging, but is intact and strong. It's in very good condition. It also has its rare dust jacket, which is in a clear Mylar protective cover. It has some large chips and tears, particularly on the spine, but is still in good condition. Abe is unable to correctly determine shipping, so it might be different depending on where you are and how quickly you want it. Please email me your town and zip code so I can calculate it. Because of its large size, it will require addition packing material to protect it. It's also quite heavy. I used to sell these for $300.00. I sold about half a dozen or more at that price. This is the one I kept for my personal collection and it's the last one I have. I've priced it low in order to sell it quickly. You should get it before it's gone.
