Published by Grosset & Dunlap / by arrangement with Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1936
Seller: Cat's Curiosities, Pahrump, NV, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Glossy B&W frontisipiece, two B&W internals (illustrator). States "Published October, 1908," but that's the original Scribner's copyright. Certainly 1910 or later since ads list the G&D address as 526 W. 26th St., but probably closer to 1936. "Good" but no better with staining to the red cloth and noticeable rub to the (full color) front pastedown. Glossy B&W frontispiece and two internal B&W plates. Semi-circular stain (looks a bit like soot) to text page facing the final internal illustration (only.) Previous owner has used a pencil to write out virtually the entire cast of the 1936 Henry Hathaway film to the blank front endpapers, from Sylvia Sidney as June Tolliver, Henry Fonda as Dave Tolliver, and Fred MacMurray as Martin Reed, all the way down through Nigel Bruce, Beulah Bondi, Fuzzy Knight (who sang the hit songs), and George "Spanky" McFarland. (The Paramount picture -- first to be shot outdoors with the three-strip Technicolor process -- was actually the third filming of Fox's 1908 novel, following two silent versions.) 422 pp. followed by 4 pp. publisher's ads. Reduced from $15.
