Agronome et exportateur, il travaille en relation étroite avec les Pachas (de Mohammed Ali à Tewfik), avec les financiers, les consuls et surtout avec les fellahs. Il réagit en démocrate. Membre de sociétés locales, rédacteur du premier manifeste du Parti National, confident d'Arabi pacha, il est le seul Européen resté dans le camp des révolutionnaires, jusqu'à l'occupation britannique. Ce livre rassemble les lettres que J. Ninet a adressées à cinq journaux français, anglais et suisses. Elles sont munies d'une introduction, de notes et d'inédits qui précisent l'apport historique de ce témoignage. Un index facilite la consultation des textes. Cette correspondance offre non seulement un reportage détaillé sur la première révolution nationale constitutionnelle dans la région, mais aussi un document de première main sur le phénomène précolonial dans l'histoire contemporaine.

Une planche in fine de passeport, firman et lettre manuscrite John Ninet a vécu 42 ans en Egypte, de 1839 à 1882. Planteur de coton, négociant, puis correspondant de presse de 1879 à 1882, il témoigna par ses écrits, les convoitises et les interventions des puissances européennes en Egypte. Il décrivit également la croissance du nationalisme dont il défendit la cause au côté de son ami Arabi Pacha, leader nationaliste égyptien et futur ministre de la guerre. Ch-1A.

Rousseau un siècle auparavant, John Ninet grandit dans un milieu de petits industriels. Adolescent, il assiste à l'exaltante montée de la gauche. Le cosmopolitisme ambiant l'incite à regarder au-delà des frontières. Après un séjour en Géorgie, il s'installe dans le delta du Nil pour y cultiver le coton. Il apprend la langue et s'emploie à former des cadres. Marqué par son éducation libérale, il s'indigne de l'injustice qui accable le peuple fellah et commence à écrire une série d'articles, la plupart anonymes, pour dénoncer la cupidité du vice-roi et de ses comparses indigènes, turcs et européens.
