Octavo, bound in three-quarters Nigerian goatskin over silk moire covered boards with a flat piece of bamboo hand-planed by Mike Clark inset into the spine, gilt ruling to the front and rear panels, top edge marbled blue, with black and white illustrations throughout. Frontispiece of a hand-colored line drawing signed in pencil by illustrator Glenn Wolff beneath with a tiny sketch of a fishing lure. One of 55 numbered special large paper copies, this is number 53. Boldly signed by the author John Gierach, the binder Carolyn Chadwick, the publisher Nick Lyons, and the illustrator Glenn Wolff on the colophon page at the rear. In fine condition. Illustrated by Glenn Wolff. A page of the original typescript manuscript with annotated author's notes in pencil tipped in at the rear. Housed in a custom full silk moire slipcase with gilt titles on a Nigerian goatskin label to the front panel. John Gierach (1946â"2024) was an American essayist whose writing helped define contemporary angling literature through its blend of humor, technical knowledge, and philosophical reflection. Best known for books such as 'Trout Bum' and 'Fishing Bamboo', he framed fly fishing as both a practical craft and a way of seeing, using rivers and landscapes to explore themes of solitude, friendship, aging, and environmental awareness. 'Fishing Bamboo' is a reflective collection of angling essays that uses bamboo fly rods as a lens for exploring craftsmanship, tradition, and the lived experience of fly fishing. Blending humor with close observation, Gierach considers the aesthetic pleasures of bambooâ"its feel, history, and association with classic tackleâ"while recounting fishing trips that emphasize patience, weather, friendship, and the unpredictability of water.
