Hard Cover Full Gloss. Condition: As New. No Jacket. ### The NEW Observers Book of Canals - by John Gagg 1982 ### ## THIS BOOK: Classified as VERY GOOD: This edition published in 1996, first published in 1982 by Frederick Warne. The laminated hardcover is called a 'Glossie'. The same quality of content and images are now in colour, bringing the illustrations up to date, and it looks like a higher resolution of the printing method is also up to date. They feel quality and can stand up to use far better than before.## ## The Observer's Books were a series of small, pocket-sized books published by Frederick Warne & Co. in the United Kingdom from 1937 to 2003. They covered various topics, including hobbies, art, history and wildlife. These books aimed to interest the observers and have also been popular amongst children. Some of them have become collector's items. This could be a lifetime's work for the dedicated collector, as there are over 800 variations, some of which are now rare. The values of the books can vary from 50 pence to hundreds of pounds.## ## Until 1969, printed books had dust covers. Each one had a unique pattern of squiggly lines at the top, but these were not especially practical because they were easy to rip and stain. From 1970, the covers received a glossy coating. Books of this type are generally called "Glossies". From the late 1970s, Warne decided to laminate the book to the actual books, making them sturdier and more resistant to wear.## ## The first Observer's Guide was published in 1937 and was on the subject of British birds. A mint copy with a dust cover is worth hundreds of pounds: also, a British wild-flowers book was produced, a mint copy of this book is worth around £220. More titles were published when this popularity was recognized. 'uniform in the series', but during World War II, production was limited due to paper and labour shortages. By 1941, Warne had published the first six Observer's books.## ### INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note. FREE SHIPPING IS UK ONLY. Please get in touch with me for a shipping quotation. ####. Hardcover. Condition: Used; Good. A 1970 first edition of Canals in Camera by John Gagg. This book is neither heavily historical nor simply about a specific cruise. Instead, it is an enthusiastic look at the whole canal system today, through the eyes of a regular and observant boater. The author has used three successive boats on inland waterways, and in the last few years has seen most canals by water, as well as seeking more distant ones by land. More than 200 photographs illustrate the book, ranging over 30 different canals. With entertaining information of canal cruising, the locks, and tunnels, and aqueducts and bridges and pubs, this is one to add to the shelf!
