Original cloth, stamped "Brachial Telegraph" on front cover. Front board detached, bottom half of backstrip gone. Lightly shelf worn. 56, [1] pp. An unusual manual introducing a new method of semiphore with many cuts illustrating this signaling process, using hand and arm gesticulations. While the system is generally designed for communications between ships, there is a substanital section of signals for military officers in the field. This visual language, proposed strictly for military uses, roughly paralleled the development of American Sign Language, which had its origins in New England in the 1820's and 1830's. OCLC 3178763.
