Quarter Leather. Condition: Very Good. Engravings and decoration (illustrator). First Edition. Paris: D'Alexis Eymery, 1816. First edition. Leather spine with 5 compartments, decorated ridges and compartments in dark brown and gold, gold titles. Marble boards, marble endpapers, all edges marble. 312 pp. Engraved frontispiece of explorers who discovered the "New World". Decorated title page. 12 additional engravings of indigenous peoples on 6 pages.(A number of engravings have been cut out). A most unusual book, signed by both the author and the publisher. Amusing publisher's signature on verso of half title with printed inscription: "Chaque exemplaire doit être revêtu de ma signature. - Je poursuivrai les contrefacteurs. [signed] A. Eymery Author's signature on last page: "Fait par moi Hapde Auguste" [emphatic script]. The book also has typos corrected in ink with the same pen and some computations on rear endpaper; this appears to have been the author's copy -- we wonder if he was calculating his profits on the rear. The book has interesting naive engravings of indigenous peoples, including Greenlanders, Eskimo, Louisiana, Florida and California natives and Mexicans. Light wear at spine edge, corners bumped, light foxing. Text and images entirely readable, text block and hinges solid. Some contemporary scribbles on the title page (from the same pen as the author). Very good condition. Scarce in any condition, rarer still with the signatures of both author and publisher. Signed by Author and Publisher.

Alexis Eymery (1774 in Saintes - 1854 in Neuilly-sur-Seine) was a French writer and bookseller-publisher, one of the main publishers of educational books of the 19th century. Initially employed at the Ministry of War, he started his education bookselling business after losing his job. May 2, 1809, he formed, in association with the bookseller Pierre Blanchard, the company P. Blanchard et compagnie, which then became P. Blanchard and A. Eymery in 1811. The association was officially dissolved on May 4, 1812 and the two partners share the premises, A. Eymery keeping the address of 30, rue Mazarine. Patented bookseller the October 1, 1812, Eymery was declared bankrupt in February 1819. On July 24, 1815, he published the Dictionnaire des girouettes de Charrin , Tastu et Proisy d'Eppe , which listed all the betrayals of his contemporaries. The great success of this work led to it being republished in the first year. He then created, around 1824, a new publishing house in Brussels which he had managed from 1825 by Pierre-Denis-Charles Fruger and André-Georges Brunet, to whom he transferred his business in 1827. After leaving his bookshop in 1830, he began to write books for young people. Scarce matching two volume set of First Editions. Engravings of Spanish conquistador colonizer Cortez overtaking the Aztecs. Illustrated throughout with depictions of civilized vs. natural nations of South American and Native American peoples.
