Published in 32 issues over 26 months, the print run was limited to 312 copies only: 200 with gold captions, 100 4to copies with black captions and 12 copies with the text entirely printed in gold. One of the very precious 200 deluxe copies printed in large folio format with the captions printed in gold. Jean-Baptiste Audebert (1759-1800) died during the publication of this work which was followed by Louis-Pierre Vieillot (1748-1831). This is one of the most important ornithological publications of the 19th century. The illustration includes 190 plates out of the text drawn by Audebert, engraved on copper by Louis Bouquet and printed in colour by Langlois, one of the best intaglio printers of the time. Sixty-eight new species are described for the first time with extreme precision, "particularly from New Holland". Audebert had indeed solicited foreign collectors and firms in order to offer the most complete work possible. Having improved the printing and colouring process, Audebert had also called upon the greatest artists of his time. "Its plates, heightened with gold, and so finished that they are little less than hand-illuminated engravings, make this one of the most beautiful books of its era. It is the gold reflections of the plumage that render the book unique and wonderful" (Fine Bird Books). "The plates with the bird portraits are in beautiful colours; in this respect they are among the best color prints found in ornithology" Anker 14. The work is a magnificent testimony to the craze for ornithology books, which began in the second half of the 18th century, and flourished in the 19th century thanks to the technical prowess of colour printing. "Jewel in the crown of this golden age of French ornithological iconography, Jean-Baptiste Audebert and Louis-Pierre Vieillot's work focuses on birds with golden or silver plumage, which Buffon had precisely renounced for lack of being able to render their lustre." In order to reproduce the effects of plumage, Audebert had the idea of applying, [.] after the printing of the colour, a fine series of small golden or silver lines. Thus enhanced, the bird's plumage becomes sparkling and changes colour and appearance depending on the angle from which it is viewed. A surprising technical feat, the secret process of which is still unknown." The folio issue with gold captions is very rare (200 copies in 1802) and very sought-after. On June 7, 1989, 32 years ago, the Bradley Martin copy in used half-binding was sold for $44,000 at Sotheby's New York. On June 16, 1988, the Marcel Jeanson copy bound by Bozérian was estimated with buyer's premium at 222,000 FF - 333,000 FF (33,800 ? - 50,760 ?), 33 years ago. A superb copy of one of the most beautiful books devoted to birds, very wide margined and preserved in its contemporary binding.

A fine fresh large paper copy in a handsome contemporary binding by Bozerian, of the earliest illustrated monograph on monkeys and Audebert's first original work. Published in 10 parts, the first two in February and July 1798, the remainder between January and October 1799. Audebert (1759-1800), was born at Rochefort. He studied painting and drawing at Paris. The present monograph, which divided the monkeys into six families, was the more impressive for employing a colour-printing process in which all the colours were printed from one plate and oil paint was substituted for gouache. In developing this new technique, his experience as a distinguished miniature painter was probably important. His interest turned to natural history after a meeting in 1789 with Gigot-d'Orex, a rich amateur collector of specimens. When Audebert died at the young age of 41, his reputation as an artist-naturalist was assured both by the present work and the later Oiseaux dorés (Paris, 1800-1802). Jean-Claude Bozérian (17962-1840) along with his younger brother, François, were the leading binders of their age, working for Napoleon during the First Empire. Jean-Baptiste Audebert excelled in the painting of primates and his highly respected 'Histoire Naturelle de Singes et des Makis' [Natural History of Apes and Monkeys] is regarded as one of the pioneering works of the golden age of French natural history publication. Audebert was born at Rochefort and trained as a miniaturist painter. This initial training gave him a tremendous ability to capture detail, an important skill for a scientific illustrator and a talent clearly displayed in these exquisite watercolor studies. His introduction to natural history began with a commission to help in the preparation of plates for Guillaume Antoine Olivier's 'Entomologie' of 1789 to 1808. Audebert was also to work on 'Oiseaux dores ou a reflets metalliques' [Golden birds or of metallic sheen], a work begun in the year of his death, 1800. Audebert's innate skill was to temper the scientific nature of these works with an understanding of the aesthetic appeal of the image. In each he not only captures the monkey's form and anatomy but also its characteristics and mannerisms, thus reflecting many of the evolution theories posited by his contemporary Frenchmen and which lay the foundations to Charles Darwin's great writings. The work was issued in 32 parts over 26 months and is divided into ten sections, illustrating the extraordinary beauty of the most spectacular species of hummingbirds, jacamars and birds of paradise. Anker says of the magnificent plates, which are heightened with gold, that the "colours of the birds and their handsome appearance have evidently been the cause of their selection for inclusion in the book. The plates with the bird portraits are in beautiful colours; in this respect they are among the best colour prints found in ornithology." The plates were etched by Audebert from his own designs and those of "les plus belles peintres de Paris et de Londres." Louis Bouquet assisted with the coloring and Langlois with the printing in oil-colors. The whole process used in the printing of the plates was invented by Audebert. All the colors were printed from a single plate, and oil paint was substituted for the more common gouache. Originally a miniature painter, Audebert became interested in natural history after meeting Gigot-d'Orex in 1789, a wealthy collector of specimens, who employed him to paint some of them. Tragically Audebert died at the young age of 41, and this is the last book he completed before his death. The text is largely by Vieillot who continued the work using Audebert's notes after the latter's death in 1800.
