Map
Original colour-printed pictorial map of the world (112 x 60.5 cm), issued for Menier Chocolat. With three inset maps of Israel, India and the Belgian Congo. Lacking the coupon portion as often, generally an excellent copy with vivid colour.
Paris: Chocolat Menier, 1956. Poster map, sheet 645 x 995mm. Laid on canvas. A map of the world centred on the Pacific with a route around the globe, starting and finishing in Paris. Underneath the map is an area to fix 120 'tickets' collected from Menier chocolate products, which would give clues to 'Enigmas' that had to be solved. The artist was J.B. Jannot, who used the pen-name Jan-Loup. He worked as an illustrator for Lisette magazine in the 1950s and early 1960s, as well as authoring his own comic stories and producing book jackets.
Condition: Very Good. This delightful map of the world was drawn by J.B. Jannott and issued by the Agence Francaise de Propagande to help boost sales for the flagging Menier Chocolate Company. Established in 1816 as a pharmaceutical manufacturer, the company initially produced chocolate as a medicinal product. Rapid growth of the world's sweet tooth in the 19th century pushed a more appealing product into the market. Menier Chocolate presented at the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago and was marketed as one of the leading chocolate manufacturer's worldwide. The First World War brought significant difficulties in production, while neutral Switzerland and the United States closed the gap. A Second World War brought further problems for the company, and it struggled to recover in the postwar world. To help boost sales, Menier Chocolate would send their adorable mascot Jacqueline on a tour of the world, shown here on this map. This was a clever tactic, as the introduction of mass air travel and the experience of a world war made for a globally aware consumer class. Jacqueline's route begins and ends in Paris. On her circumnavigation she stops at 120 different locations, most of which are represented by an illustration; often wildlife, local inhabitants (stereotypically portrayed), or landmarks. Of particular note along Jacqueline's trip are the biblical scenes in the Middle East, a literal Black Sea, a long side trip to the Hudson Bay, and the total exclusion of the U.S.S.R. (this was the Cold War, after all). In addition to a bright promotional piece, the map was also designed to boost sales through a competition. Buyers of Menier Chocolate would be rewarded with a slip represented 1 of the 120 locations on Jacqueline's trip. On the bottom of the map are boxes where each piece can be affixed, in addition to lines for the answer to three riddles (clues were also distributed with purchases). Once the board was complete, it would be mailed in as an entry for a prize drawing. A previous owner of this map, age 4 (with great handwriting), filled out the address section, but the rest of the board remains blank. Sheet Width (in) 44 Sheet Height (in) 29.75 Condition Description Creasing along fold lines, as issued. Minor toning evident in the white areas and one spot in the title. Some wear along fold lines, but very good and presentable.

Map
Very good. Light wear on original fold lines. Backed on linen, poster style. Size 29.5 x 43 Inches. This is a stunning 1957 pictorial map of the world drawn by J. B. Jannot and issued by Chocolat Menier to boost interest in the fading French chocolate giant. The map allows its reader to follow Jacqueline, Chocolat Menier's adorable 'little girl' mascot, on a great tour du monde (tour of the world) starting and finishing in Paris. A Closer Look There are 120 destinations, most highlighted with striking graphic imagery. Destinations were associated with tickets given out in bars of Menier Chocolate. As they were collected, the full 120 vouchers could be pasted on the board below. These would give clues to solving three 'enigmas,' also built into the board. Once completed, the bottom 'board' section could be cut off and mailed to Chocolat Menier, where they would be entered into a competition possibly a drawing. Chocolat Menier Chocolat Menier was founded in 1816 as a pharmaceutical supply house specializing in chocolate, which was then used only medicinally. Around 1893 the company hired Firmin Bouisset to promote their chocolate as a recreational treat. They came up with the image of an innocent young girl, Jacqueline, writing graffiti on a wall with a piece of Menier chocolate. They exhibited at the 1893 Chicago World's Columbian Exposition as one of the largest chocolate companies in the world. Nonetheless, by the 1950s, faced with growing local and international competition and suffering under mismanagement, the company fell upon hard times. It was around this time that the present promotional was produced. Publication History This map was drawn by J. B. Jannot. It is one of two maps drawn by Jannot for Chocolat Menier, the other being a map of Europe and Asia, also with 120 tickets and a 'journey' theme. Both were published by the Agence Française de Propaganda . The poster proved popular but insufficient to revive Menier's status. Chocolat Menier was sold and passed through numerous hands. Today the brand is owned by the Swiss chocolate conglomerate Nestlé. This map can occasionally be found without the lower 'cut off' portion, but the present example, with the full board, is exceptional and rare. References: Rumsey 11485.000.
