Und als Jin-tae, von der Barbarei des Krieges verroht, hilflose nordkoreanische Kriegsgefangene quält und massakriert, empfindet Jin-seok nicht nur Verachtung, sondern regelrechten Hass für seinen Bruder. Schwer geschockt vom Tod seiner liebevollen Verlobten, die unschuldig von fanatischen südkoreanischen Antikommunisten erschossen wird, dreht Jin-tae vollkommen durch: Er erschlägt einen seiner Kommandeure und läuft über zur nordkoreanischen Armee. Die Familientragödie gipfelt im Kugelhagel und Kanonendonner bei der Konfrontation der Brüder auf dem Schlachtfeld - Jin-seok in südkoreanischer Uniform, Jin-tae in nordkoreanischer Uniform - die auf Leben und Tod miteinander kämpfen.
