Previous owner's name and date on second page leaf, dated 1910. Shelfwear: light scuffing along edges and covers, front inside spine hinge is cracked, delicate binding, tanned page leafs. Volume is in Very Good-minus condition.

Brock, including frontispiece, some pages uncut in all volumes excluding Pride and Prejudice, minor loss to lower corner of vii in Mansfield Park, very light spotting to a few leaves of Emma, else only the occasional spot or mark, usual age-toning, pages are remarkably bright and pristine, very good; finely bound by Bayntun Riviere, later half green calfskin over green cloth boards, spine in 6 compartments with gilt lettering to second and third, gilt emblem to others, marble endpapers, top edges gilt, slight offsetting to endpapers, old bookseller sticker 'Lupton Bros.' to front pastedown of each volume, fading to spine, corners a little bumped, small white mark to upper board of Sense and Sensibility, otherwise only light, general signs of wear, very good; [viii], 308pp, [xiv], 336pp, [viii], 396pp, [viii], 395pp, [1]pp, [x], 206pp, [viii], 216pp. A most handsome set of this very desirable edition, in very good condition. C.E. Brock originally illustrated Pride and Prejudice for Macmillan in 1895, with black and white line drawings. He then collaborated with his brother H.M. Brock on this set for Dent in 1898.

First deluxe editions thus (published between 1907-1909); 6 volumes, 8vo (200 x 130mm); illustrated endpapers, each volume with 24 coloured plates by Charles E. Brock, identical contemporary gift inscriptions to ffeps, spotting at prelims, usual age-toning, pages are remarkably bright and pristine with exceptions of Sense and Sensibility and Persuasion which exhibit some spotting throughout; publisher's exuberantly blocked ivory vellum with gilt floral decoration, top edges gilt whilst others untrimmed, apart from minor soiling to boards, this set is notable for its remarkable condition, apart from minor fading to upper panel of Mansfield Park, the gilt decoration is richly preserved, very good indeed. A beautifully illustrated edition based on water-colours by Charles E. Brock, scarce to find in a complete set with it's desirable deluxe binding.

Ten 16mo. volumes; in three quarter blue morocco double ruled at the edges, over marbled paper boards with matching endpaper; top edges gilt; the spines with raised bands, lettered in gilt with ornaments in the Egyptian style; some edgewear; foxing and fading to the marbled paper. ~~The several illustrations by C. E. Brock in each volume, with their soft pastel colors, seem particularly well suited to Jane Austen's writings. Very Good binding.

With a total of 144 colour plates illustrated by Brock, including a frontispiece and vignette title page to each volume. Elegantly bound in publisher's pale green cloth, elaborately blocked in gilt, pictorial endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Contents clean, same neat gift inscriptions to each volume dated 14th November 1918, endpapers with offset toning as usual, covers carefully handled. Hinges of Pride and Prejudice very weak, nearly detached. A delightful set in very good condition. Following the first colour-illustrated production of Austen's works by C.E. and H.W. Brock in 1898, this edition features significantly more illustrations, expanded and revised by Charles Brock alone. This collection was given by Roland L'Estrange Bryce to Miss Bessie Allan, three days after the Armistice, thanking her for her service during the final years of the war. Bryce (1889-1953), the son of Liberal MP Annan Bryce, worked at the Foreign Office. His sisters Marjery and Rosalind were prominent Suffragettes.

The anonymously published Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), and Emma (1816) were modest successes, but they brought her little fame in her lifetime. She wrote two other novels Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, both published posthumously in 1817 and began another, eventually titled Sanditon, but it was left unfinished on her death. She also left behind three volumes of juvenile writings in manuscript, the short epistolary novel Lady Susan, and the unfinished novel The Watsons. Provenance: no inscriptions or bookplates.
