Articles from this publication may include a copied first or last page. The first members appointed to the Council of Virginia by King James included: Edward Maria Wingfield, Capt. Bartholomew Gosnold, Capt. John Smith, Capt. John Ratcliffe, Capt. John Martin, and Capt. George Kendall. Capt. John Martin, the subject of this biography, (1562-1632), has been overshadowed by the figure of John Smith, but he was an influential merchant adventurer, and a prominent member of the Virginia Company until its dissolution. He was the only man to protest against the abandonment of Virginia on the morning of June 7, 1610.
