Hardcover. Condition: Good. Blackie and Son, n.d. 1860). 4 of 5 volumes of the original blindstamped cloth with gilt harp and ivy on cover and spine. "Naturae Donum". Missing Volume 1. Good+, moderate wear at head and heels. No former owner marks. From 1790 to 1800 Hogg was shepherd to Mr. Laidlaw of Blackhouse, on the Douglas Burn, Yarrow. Hogg found books here that stimulated his intelligence. He began to be known as ?the poeter,? having made songs, as he says in his ?Autobiography,? ?for the lasses to sing in chorus.? After Burns death he began to try to write his verses out. And after moving home to Etterick, and making the acquaintance of Scott, who was in search of more songs for his 'Border Minstrelsy', began to offer his mother's rich store of songs and his own compositions. He made his career then, struggling like all poets, a literary one. (DNB).
