In a contemporary-to-the-period, full dark leather, with 7 raised bands (decorative gilt-tooling within each compartment) and title label along the spine. Forgiveable wear, with some scuffing and abrading at the panels, and a bit of chipping and loss along the spine ends. Folio, 51 of Vignole's legendary engraved plates (#s 43-51 hand-numbered). Internally, light foxing and offsetting to the pastedowns and endsheets, neat former owner inscription (20th century) at the front free endpaper. Jacques Barozzi da Vignole (1507-1573), often simply called Vignola, was considered one of the great Italian architects of 16th century Mannerism.

Scarce and early edition of what has been called "one of the most successful architectural textbooks ever written," originally produced by Jacques Barozzio de Vignole in 1562. Our copy beautifully preserved in a contemporary brown tree-calf binding with leather label on spine which has gilt lettering and ornaments. Original pagination with superb contemporary inscription on front fly (6 lines) dated 1813. Complete, with the 58 individually numbered etched plates superbly illustrating various aspects of five orders of architecture, namely: Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, and composite. All plates clean and bright with very minimal foxing on just a few pages, but at the perimeter (minimal). A near fine copy of a wonderfully illustrated classic. With manuscript inscription dated 1813. Pencil inscription at base of etched frontispiece stating, "1735," however, this was printed more likely 1770-1780. Housed in clamshell cloth case.
