L'un des principaux pamphlets que lancèrent les "antiphilosophes" contre les Lumières et leurs représentants, Rousseau y est particulièrement visé. Docteur en théologie, l'abbé Joseph de Giry de Saint-Cyr devint précepteur du dauphin de France, conseiller d'État et membre de l'Académie française (1741). (Conlon, 'Siècle des Lumières', 58:751 et 'Ouvrages relatifs à J.-J. Rousseau', n°86. INED, 2053). 2- Edition originale. Avocat, conseiller à la cour des Aides de Provence et bibliothécaire de Marie-Antoinette, Moreau était engagé dans la lutte contre les Encyclopédistes qu'il plaisantait sous le nom de 'Cacouacs'. "Il les montre comme un corps organisé, possédant tout l'attirail nécessaire au combat, et marchant délibérément à l'assaut de la morale, de la religion et du gouvernement" (J. Proust, 'Diderot et l'Encyclopédie', p. 109). Présenté sous forme de voyage imaginaire, ce pamphlet eut un retentissement considérable et le sobriquet fit fortune.
