Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Faced in 2002 with the prospect of dying at age fifty-five of a heart condition he never knew he had, William Jefferson was forced to reflect on the things that meant the most in his life. So, from his hospital bed, he started to write about the people, surroundings, and situations that raised him. Jefferson grew up in a small town on a farm in the rural South in the fifties and sixties, and recounts those hard times here in short story form. Sharing the powerful lessons of family, religion, racism, and generational curses and blessings that flowed from those experiences.Dying Is the Easy Part shows that while the hard parts of life can occasionally be conquered, life is more about being ready to die than ready to live. Being ready to die is all about faith. As Jefferson recovered in his hospital room, he realized that we spend our lives worrying about avoiding death, when life is the real challenge. As Shakespeare declared, Of all the wonders in the world, it seems to me most strange, that men should fear, seeing that death, a necessary end, will come when it will come. The stories within are about African American, Southern life. But they are not just for Southerners, and not just for Black Southerners. They are for people who want to live life without fear; for those who want success in life, and also want to keep that success in perspective; for those who want to laugh through situations where others are focused on the negative; and for those who are inspired by the power of simple people, people engaged in daily struggles. People who rise above them to pass on life-sustaining lessons to their children and families. …

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Jefferson Davis is one of the most complex and controversial figures in American political history (and the man whom Oscar Wilde wanted to meet more than anyone when he made his tour of the United States). Elected president of the Confederacy and later accused of participating in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, he is a source of ongoing dissension between northerners and southerners. This volume, the first of its kind, is a selected collection of his writings culled in large part from the authoritative Papers of Jefferson Davis, a multivolume edition of his letters and speeches published by the Louisiana State University Press, and includes thirteen documents from manuscript collections and one privately held document that have never before appeared in a modern scholarly edition. From letters as a college student to his sister, to major speeches on the Constitution, slavery, and sectional issues, to his farewell to the U.S. Senate, to his inaugural address as Confederate president, to letters from prison to his wife, these selected pieces present the many faces of the enigmatic Jefferson Davis. As William J. Cooper, Jr., writes in his Introduction, "Davis's notability does not come solely from his crucial role in the Civil War. Born on the Kentucky frontier in the first decade of the nineteenth century, he witnessed and participated in the epochal transformation of the United States from a fledgling country to a strong nation spanning the continent. In his earliest years his father moved farther south and west to Mississippi. As a young army officer just out of West Point, he served on the northwestern and southwestern frontiers in an army whose chief mission was to protect settlers surging westward. Then, in 1846 and 1847, as colonel of the First Mississippi Regiment, he fought in the Mexican War, which resulted in 1848 in the Mexican Cession, a massive addition to the United States of some 500,000 square miles, including California and the modern Southwest. As secretary of war and U.S. senator in the 1850s, he advocated government support for the building of a transcontinental railroad that he believed essential to bind the nation from ocean to ocean.".…

Paperback. Condition: Good. 'Jefferson Farjeon is quite unsurpassed for creepy skill in mysterious adventures.'Dorothy L. SayersRichard Temperley arrives at Euston station early on a fogbound London morning. He takes refuge in a nearby hotel, along with a disagreeable fellow passenger, who had snored his way through the train journey. But within minutes the other man has snored for the last time - he has been shot dead while sleeping in an armchair. Temperley has a brief encounter with a beautiful young woman, but she flees the scene. When the police arrive, Detective Inspector James discovers a token at the crime scene: 'a small piece of enamelled metal. Its colour was crimson, and it was in the shape of the letter Z.'Temperley sets off in pursuit of the mysterious woman from the hotel, and finds himself embroiled in a cross-country chase - by train and taxi - on the tail of a sinister serial killer. This classic novel by the author of the best-selling Mystery in White is a gripping thriller by a neglected master of the genre.…
