The fort, originally called Carillon by the French who built it on the site of Fort Vaudreuil (1755), was lost to the British in the French & Indian War, or the Conquest Of Canada. It was the principle outpost of the French on their ill defined border with the English in New York and New England. The Lake Champlain valley was one of the most contested areas of North America until 1815. Fort Ticonderoga,as the English renamed it, was the scene of the first great American victory in the Revolution, when it fell to Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys of neighboring Vermont.
