Vintage illustrated sheet music with ukulele arrangement by pioneering performer and arranger May Singhi Breen ('The Ukulele Lady').… Large-format issue featuring a vivid Jazz Age cover illustration signed by Irving Politzer (1898-1971), the noted New York commercial artist whose Art Deco-influenced sheet-music covers became closely associated with Tin Pan Alley publishing during the 1920s. The design combines bold typography, theatrical caricature imagery, and an inset photographic portrait of vaudeville/radio performer Margaret Young, creating a quintessential Roaring Twenties presentation. Condition is Very Good. Covers retain strong color and display appeal with moderate edgewear, corner rubbing, small chips/losses at extremities, light creasing, and general handling wear consistent with age. Interior pages remain complete and generally clean with no major tears or markings noted. Binding remains sound. Rear cover contains period advertising for contemporary popular songs including 'Hula Lou' and 'Twelve O'Clock at Night,' as well as an early 'Radiophans' promotional panel listing radio stations throughout the United States and abroad. First and only printing as issued in 1924, confirmed by the original copyright statement and publisher imprint ('Ager, Yellen & Bornstein, Inc., 1595 Broadway, New York City'). Politzer's stylized commercial artwork is increasingly collected today as an example of American Jazz Age graphic design and Tin Pan Alley visual culture. Jack Yellen (1892-1991) was one of America's major popular lyricists, remembered for standards including 'Happy Days Are Here Again' and 'Ain't She Sweet.' Composer Milton Ager (1893-1979) was a central Tin Pan Alley songwriter whose collaborations helped shape American popular music during the 1920s and 1930s. One of the defining popular songs of the late 1920s, 'Side By Side' became an enduring American standard recorded by numerous dance bands and later interprete…d by artists ranging from Kay Starr and Doris Day to Dean Martin and Bing Crosby. The cover captures the optimistic romanticism of the Roaring Twenties: a stylish couple overlooking an open landscape beneath dramatic stylized clouds rendered in an Art Deco-influenced palette of crimson, black, and pale green. The inset portrait of organist Paul H. Forster adds period performance association and reflects the sheet music industry's close ties to radio, theater organs, and public entertainment venues. Composer and lyricist Harry Woods (1896-1970) was among the most successful Tin Pan Alley writers of the interwar years, producing standards such as 'When the Red, Red Robin Comes Bob, Bob, Bobbin' Along,' 'I'm Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover,' and 'Side By Side.' His songs became staples of vaudeville, dance orchestras, and early radio broadcasting. The illustrated cover art by Politzer exemplifies commercial music illustration during the transition from late Art Nouveau styling into streamlined Art Deco aesthetics. Cover art by Irving Politzer (1898-1971), an important American commercial illustrator associated with the Jazz Age and late Tin Pan Alley era. Politzer produced numerous sheet music covers during the 1920s, developing a recognizable style that blended romantic imagery, Art Deco influences, elegant typography, and fashionable flapper-era figures. His work appeared for major New York music publishers including Shapiro, Bernstein & Co., Jerome H. Remick, and Henry Waterson. The atmospheric design on Side By Side - with its stylized clouds, romantic couple, and restrained color palette - is an excellent example of Politzer's mature 1920s aesthetic. Condition: Very Good. Complete and well-preserved with light edge wear, soft corner creasing, mild toning, and scattered handling marks consistent with age. Interior music pages remain bright and highly legible. Rear advertising panel promoting contemporary Shapiro, Bernstein song hits and 'records and rolls' survives cleanly and provides excellent contextual ephemera from the phonograph and player-piano era. In this one, August, "the wild and unscrupulous, yet ever generous wanderer, returns after twenty years to his home in northern Norway." An early reprint of the prolific Ms. Mitchell's first novel (first publis…hed in the U.S. by Dial Press in 1929), in which a famous arctic explorer is found dead in a bathtub at an English country house -- and is discovered to have been a woman! (Much, I suppose, like a purchaser of this book by "G.M. Mitchell," as she is called in the front jacket panel, might have been surprised to have learned the author's gender only upon turning to the title page.) As Michele Slung wrote of Mitchell, she's "a special taste" whose work "has been little published in the United States since the beginning of her career [yet] to mystery readers in England who have followed the classic school she is practically an institution." Considered in her heyday to be in the same league as Agatha Christie or Dorothy L. Sayers, she wrote a total of 66 books featuring psychoanalyst-writer-sleuth Mrs. Beatrice Adela Lestrange Bradley, introduced in this book -- one or more every year until her death in 1983. As Slung also notes: "To put it mildly, eccentric goings-on are Mitchell's hallmark," with much attention devoted to "witchcraft, the supernatural, and folklore esoterica." It might also be observed that very few (if any) long-running detective series have featured a central character whose creator has taken such pains to make an unappealing, indeed almost repulsive figure: the very first mention of Mrs. Bradley in this, her introductory exploit, has another character describing her as a "little, old, shrivelled, clever, sarcastic sort of dame [who] would have been smelt out as a witch in a less tolerant age." And the author herself is scarcely more charitable, writing of her "nasty, dry, claw-like hands, and her arms, yellow and curiously repellant," employing adjectives like "reptilian," and describing her (more than once) as resembling a "playful alligator."
