Migration is a natural outcome when society faces a shortage of resources or opportunities. Youth constitute a valuable human capital resource base for India, and migration of young people has become more frequent as a result of neoliberal policies, coupled with social, political, economic and demographic conditions. Youth Migration in Emerging India focuses on this challenging and neglected aspect of Indian society. Tamil Nadu has, throughout history, received large numbers of in-migrants, many of whom subsequently became part of Tamil society. Equally, the Tamil region has had a long tradition of out-migration, including international migration as indentured labour on colonial plantations. The Tamil Nadu Migration Survey 2015 provided significant insights for the first time into the state s migration flows based on 20,000 households.
