You know the work of Charles Addams-who signed his work as "Chas Addams"-even if you don't realize it. He was a freelance cartoonist whose works mostly appeared in "…The New Yorker," from the early 1930s all the way until his death in 1988. He specialized in single-panel black-and-white drawings with macabre but humorous subjects. Within a few years after his first cartoons appeared in "The New Yorker," he developed a recurring cast of characters, a ghoulish family that lived in a gothic house in a cemetery. (Interestingly, their cartoon house bears a distinct resemblance to the creepy house in Alfred Hitchcock's movie "Psycho," which was released in 1960, decades after it began appearing in Addams' cartoons.and Hitchcock and Addams were friends.) In the 1960s, they inspired the television show "The Addams Family," which was the first time the crew as a whole gained names. That show, of course, inspired the later movie franchise and further spin-offs. A good many of those original Addams Family cartoons appear in "The World of Chas Addams," but many more of the 300 cartoons in this book are one-offs. There are also 24 full-color "New Yorker" covers that are less likely to follow Addams' darkly humorous themes. The pictures cover the full range of his career, from his first cartoon for "The New Yorker" to others that were published posthumously. Addams' widow, Tee Addams, who edited the book, provides a very brief explanation of her method, and novelist Wilfred Sheed, another friend of Charles Addams, provides a much longer introduction. A note on the copyright page says, "Most of the drawings, cartoons, and covers included in this collection were originally published in "The New Yorker," but as they appear without individual commentary and only with the captions that were with them when they were originally published, there is nothing to indicate which were published elsewhere. This is a first edition, first printing copy, bound (fittingly) in black cloth. Addams' signature is stamped in black on the front cover, with the full title and the publisher's name stamped in gold foil on the spine. There is some slight fading to a small part of the top and bottom of the spine, but the cover is otherwise undamaged, and the lettering is unfaded. The pages are unmarked and there are no signs of tanning, foxing, or similar damage. The page facing the half-title page appears to be tugging at the binding stitches, but it is still firmly attached and not the least shaken. There is a deboss of the Alfred A. Knopf logo on the lower back cover of the book, near the spine, but this is typical of a Knopf publication and does not indicate a book club edition. The dust jacket is slightly soiled, but again, there is no sign of damage from age or sunning. The top and bottom of the spine of the jacket and the corners of the jacket have been bumped. There is a miniscule closed tear at the top corner of the rear of the jacket and another at the top of the jacket spine, and a ½-inch closed tear about halfway along the top edge of the jacket.
