From the Preface: "New York's pride in her National Guardsmen was fully sustained in the great war. The 27th Division, composed of the various National Guard units throughout the state, under the command of Maj.-Gen. John F. O'Ryan, fought valiantly and irresistibly. The greatest single feat credited to the New York division was the breaking of the Hindenburg line, the 'impregnable line' of fortifications which the Germans had erected as a last line of defense." The 27th was made up of Infantry Regiments (105th, 106th, 107th, 108th); Field Artillery Regiments (104th, 105th, 106th); Machine Gun Battalions (104th, 105th, 106th); 102nd Trench Mortar Battery; 102nd Engineers regiment; 102nd Field Signal Battalion; plus 102nd Military Police; and 102nd logistics units including Divisional train, HQ, Ammunition Train, Supply, Sanitary, HQ Troop.
