Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition in English. First UK edition, and first edition in English. Translated from the Russian with Introduction and Notes by Max Hayward. Illustrated with black and white photographs. ***Very good in burgundy cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the s…pine. The boards are clean and unmarked. Tail of spine slightly creased. Corners sharp. Page block edges foxed. Very slight lean to the binding. Internally also very good with some rubbed out pencil marks at the top of the front free endpaper, but no other previous ownership inscriptions. There is some offsetting and foxing to the endpapers, and some foxing affecting first and last few pages, but not the interior (please see scans). ***In a very good illustrated dustwrapper, which is unpriced. The dustwrapper is complete - just slightly rubbed, creased and browned at the edges - mainly creased at the top edge of the front panel. Not faded. No significant creases, chips or tears. Some foxing to the internal flaps. ***488 pages including appendixes, biographical guide, notes and comments, sources of quotations, and index. ***238mm x 154mm. ***'For the past fourteen years of Boris Pasternak's life - the crucial period during which he wrote "Doctor Zhivago" - Olga Ivinskaya was his closest companion. She helped in his work, and represented him in his dealings with publishers, the Soviet authorities, and the outside world in general. More than this, she provided the essential inspiration for him in the writing of the novel, serving as the prototype of its heroine, Lara. ***Because of her association with Pasternak (whom the Soviet secret police was reluctant to molest directly, in view of his universally acknowledged standing as one of Russia's greatest poets), Madame Ivinskaya was twice imprisoned in a forced labour camp - first from 1949 to 1953, and a second time after Pasternak's death from 1960 to 1964. After her return to Moscow from her second imprisonment, Madame Ivinskaya began to write this book, which was completed in 1972. "A Captive of Time", apart from giving an intimate picture of Pasternak in his later years, will bring home to readers in the West, as very few other books have done, what it was like to live in Moscow during the final demented stages of Stalin's rule, and then in the anxious, uncertain times that followed under his successor, Nikita Khrushchev.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A first edition, and first edition in English, in very good condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
