Trade Paperback. Condition: Fine. First Bison Book Printing. 361 Pages Indexed. A pristine, new book with flawless interior text pages. There are 32 Illustrations mostly photographs and portraits. A favorite of President Andrew Jackson and the daughter of Senator Thomas Hart Benton of Missouri, Jessie Benton was acquainted with…the famous from childhood. When the vivacious belle met John C. Fremont, the handsomest young man who ever walked the streets of Washington, love bloomed. Always passionately devoted to the controversial explorer, soldier, and politician, Jessie bore John five children, maintained a family life, charmed and campaigned on his behalf, and helped him write the popular reports of his western trailblazing. These pages, filled with public figures such as Kit Carson and Abraham Lincoln, present a lively and fearless woman. The author's family knew Jessie Fremont during her last years in Los Angeles, had access to private letters. Introducing this Bison Book edition is Christine Bold, an assistant professor of English at the University of Guelph, and the author of Selling the Wild West: Popular Western Fiction, 1860 to 1960. Contents: The Widow Benton's Settlement, Colonel McDowell's to the Mountain Top, A Washington Childhood, An Elopement, Jessie Fremont Topographical Reporter, Government Orders in a Sewing Basket, All of Which I Saw and Part of Which I Was, Under the Gun of Fremont's Court-Martial, A Forty-Niner via Panama, In Search of Health, Wife of the First Senator from California, A Guest at the Courts of England and France, Our Jessie the Toast of the Nation, Life at Mariposa and Black Point, Civil War Duty Western Department, There Is a Time to Do and a Time to Stand Aside, Pocaho Salon, The Governor's Lady, Los Angeles Retreat, and Chapter's End. Plus Appendix: Personal Recollections of Jessie Benton Fremont, Bibliography, Periodicals and Pamphlets, Newspapers, Fremont Family Papers, Publications of Jessie Benton Fremont , and Birth and Death Dates of the Fremont Family. Paprocki, Greg - Cover Illustration and Design (illustrator).

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First American Edition (SD). Scandinavian Classics Volume XIV. 'This series of Scandinavian Classics is published by The American-Scandinavian Foundation in the belief that greater familiarity with the chief literary monuments of the North will help Americans to a better understandin…g of Scandinavians, and thus serve to stimulate their sympathetic cooperation to good ends.' As you can see from the photos, the maroon covers are in very nice condition. They are very clean. The gilt design on the front cover is very bright. The gilt lettering on the spine is also very bright. The edges and corners of the covers are in excellent condition. I don't see any rubbing. The bottom edge of the spine has a thin wrinkle. The top page edge is gilt. It looks very good. The middle and bottom page edges are deckled or rough-cut. They did a pretty good job, a few of the middle edges of early pages are a little jagged with slight losses. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. There are no binding issues. The pages are exceptionally clean. I've scrolled through them several times without finding any instances of soiling. I'm not seeing any conspicuous creasing, no turned-down corners or placeholder creases. There are no markings. No attachments. There is a neatly signed name (Astrid Lier) off the top edge of the blank front end paper. There is no other writing of any kind to be found anywhere in the book. 'Among Lie's finest works must be considered Familien paa Gilje (1883) which was a striking document of the life of an officer's family, and the few options given to the daughters of such families.' In 1904, the King of Norway awarded Lie the Grand Cross of the Order of St. Olav.
