J…ohn Piper (1903-1992) is most well known as a landscape painter and designer of stained glass, but he was also a remarkable photographer, with a painter's sensibility. The selection of images made for this book have been reproduced in duo-tone lithography from prints made under the artist's direction. The large collection of Piper's negatives is now housed in the Tate Gallery archive, having been donated by the artist in 1987.
