In his subsequent work, which includes The Gospel According to St Matthew, Oedipus Rex and Theorem, these two opposing tendencies represent a dialogue between, on the one hand, his Marxism and atheism, and, on the other, his impulse to reach, through mythology, deeper levels of reality.
