Hardcover. Condition: Fair. A mid-nineteenth-century Baptist hymnbook compiled by James Inglis. The volume is a collection of hymns designed for both public and private Christian devotion. It reflects the evangelical and Baptist piety of its time, emphasizing themes of pilgrimage, worship, meditation, and praise while believers are ?in the house of [their] pilgrimage? (this earthly life).ABOUT THIS COPY: Bound in full black leather with gilt tooled ornamentation and lettering on the cover and spine. "Mrs. W. H. Reeves" is printed in gilt on the cover, which almost certainly indicates that this particular copy was either: A personal possession that Mrs. Reeves had marked to identify it as hers; or a gift or presentation copy given to her. In the nineteenth century it was very common for books?especially religious books, gift books, and volumes intended for personal or family use?to have the owner?s name stamped in gilt on the front cover. Hubbed spine bears three raised bands. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers in teals, dark pink, yellow, and black. Royal blue silk ribbon bookmark. The collection contains 383 hymns. Please note however, that the lyrics to the hymns are the only text present; there is NOT a musical score that accompanies the text. Also contains an appendix and index of first lines. xvi, 240 pp. As the title indicates, the book is divided into two parts: Part I ? Hymns for the Assemblies of the Saints: Intended for corporate worship and gatherings of the church. Part II ? Hymns of Private Worship, Devout Meditation, and Praise: Designed for personal or family use, focusing on individual devotion and reflection.CONDITION: This copy is fair only, and has been well loved. The front board is detached completely, but present. Significant external wear with the top 1/5 of the spine missing, and other general wear. Some discoloration within endpapers. Some foxing and continuous dampstain, but the text remains uncompromised, and is otherwise unmarked. A fragile little copy, yet complete. Full refund if not satisfied.
