Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. First Printing [Stated]. 272 pages. DJ has slight wear and soiling. Minor sticker residue on back of DJ. The author was a veteran newspaper sports reporter. This work combines a fan's passion and a journalist's perception in a chronicle of the Yankees, from owner…s to bat boys, over the past two decades. Derived from a Kirkus review: An even-handed, review of Yankee fortunes from 1965 (the year CBS bought the team from Dan Topping and Del Webb) to the 1982 season. Lally, a sportswriter who also was a columnist for New York Yankees magazine, plays the loyal reporter-fan. Evidently mindful of the Ruth-DiMaggio-Mantle dynasties, he recounts the fiasco under Johnny Keane, who as manager of St. Louis had beaten the Yanks in the 1964 Series. Things got still worse in '66 when they finished in last place (for the first time since 1912). 1967 under Ralph Houk witnessed "a complete breakdown," the departure of Whitey Ford and Elston Howard, and a record of 72-90. In '68 an ailing Mantle finally retired. It was a slow uphill grind, until 1976 when they clinched the divisional title, beat the Royals for the pennant, and were beaten by Cincinnati in the Series. '77 brought Reggie Jackson, his fights with Billy Martin, and his immortal performance as Mr. October. The Yanks repeated as world champions in '78. Since 78 all of George Steinbrenner's millions have failed to bring home a winner. It's a familiar tale and Lally retells it fueled by various passions (including scorn for the Yankee management and envy of Baltimore's) and the prose has zip. Terrence Fehr illustrated the jacket (illustrator).
