He went from Glasgow to London, where he taught Anatomy, practised Medicine and became the Queen's Obstetrician. He founded a School of Medicine, the first in London and the only one for eighty years. He made original observations in Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology. He exercised an important influence in Medicine, Obstetrics, Juris- prudence. He collected a great library, with examples of very many of the printed books of the fifteenth century and several hundreds of valuable ancient manu- script books. He amassed the second largest cabinet of ancient coins in the world. He left these collections to the University of Glasgow, along with his pictures, specimens and preparations, as a permanent foundation for the public benefit and the use of students and scholars of all time." Author's inscription to FFEP thus, "Tenovus - Scotland A small token of affirmation, Charles Illingworth" (Tenovus is a medical research charity).
