Top of page block dyed red as issued. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, but overall fabulous jacket very bright and unfaded. Not price clipped (9s 6d), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 264pp. It is 1943 and the war has brought rationing to the Hebridean islands of Great and Little Todday. When food is in short supply, it is bad enough, but when the whisky runs out, it looks like the end of the world. Morale is at rock bottom. George Campbell needs a wee dram to give him the courage to stand up to is mother and marry Catriona. The priest, the doctor and, of course, the landlord at the inn are all having a very thin time of it. There's no conversation, no jollity, no fun, until a shipwreck off the coast brings a piece of extraordinary good fortune. Supposedly based on the island of Barra and on a true event, the running aground of the 'SS Politician' (in the book it is called the 'Cabinet Minister'!), this comic, immensely popular novel was made into an Ealing film in 1949, starring Basil Radford, Bruce Seton, Joan Greenwood and Gordon Jackson. It was the directorial debut of Alexander Mackendrick and the screenplay was by Sir Compton Mackenzie (1992-1973). In 2016 it was made into another popular film starring Eddie Izzard (as Captain Waggett), James Cosmo et al. A scarce book.
