Gutes Ex.; Einband etwas begriffen. - Französisch. - Apres avoir debute comme peintre de batailles sous I'influence d'Esaias van de Velde et de Jan Martsen le Jeune. Asselijn partit pour Rome (1640-1644), ou il se joignit au groupe des peintres de genre et paysagistes hollandais. Cette colonie d'artistes, appelee " Schildersbent", I'accueillit sous le sobriquet de " Krabbetje ". Apres son voyage a Rome et des sejours plus ou moins longs a Lyon et a Paris, il s'etablit a Amsterdam, ou il dut attendre jusqu'en 1647 pour etre inscrit officiellement dans les registres et jusqu'en 1652 pour obtenir ses droits de citoyen; il y demeura jusqu'a sa mort. Sur le plan artistique, son sejour a Rome lui permit de decouvrir les bambochades - scenes de genre tirees de la vie populaire romaine -, surtout telles que Pieter van Laer les avait creees, ainsi que la peiriture de paysage, notamment les ceuvres de Jan Both. Emboitant le pas a ce dernier courant, Asselijn devint I'un des representants les plus significatifs de la peinture de paysage " italianisante ". Son interet portait exclusivement sur le charme pictural de la vie populaire italienne et sur I'intensite de lumiere et de couleur du paysage meridional exotique. Le " Paysage de mines " d'Asselijn montre un petit groupe de chasse - trois cavaliers, I'un d'entre eux portant un faucon sur la main, un garcon a pied portant un fusil sur I'epaule et suivi des chiens - qui, traversant lentement la cour d'un chateau delabre, passe devant le spectateur et devant un paysan qui, sous les aboiements de I'un des chiens, adresse un salut respectueux. Cette petite scene est saisie en fin d'apres-midi, dans une lumiere frisante qui donne a I'episode son caractere paisible et grace a laquelle les personnages, les murs, la vegetation et le terrain s'harmonisent dans des coloris tendres et chauds. Compare aux paysages ulterieurs, ou le caractere panoramique est plus marque, ce tableau nous montre une scene limitee dans I'espace. II s'en degage une plus grande intimite qui se situe davantage dans la ligne de la peinture de genre. La qualite de la touche extremement delicate et les couleurs riches en nuances revelent Asselijn comme etant deja un grand specialiste de la peinture de paysage italianisante. Les critiques voient egalement dans ce tableau une premiere manifestation d'un style tout a fait personnel.
