"Every field of study and pleasure has its own technical language. There is a language of machines, a language of sailing, a language of sewing, and a language of music. We learn to "talk terms" as we learn to play the game. When we are about to be confirmed, we begin to use the language of the Episcopal Church. We could not think very much about religion if we did not understand the words in which important ideas are expressed. This book was written to help you understand words you will hear and words you will need to use. In a number of cases where a word has several meanings, More Than Words takes up only those which are the most important, or the most usual, or the most likely to stand for something which you have met in your own life. The other meanings can be found by following the index to The Church's Teaching on page 205. In addition to many quotations from the Bible, special passages from the Book of Common Prayer are mentioned. It will help you to look them up. Hymns are suggested which show how the words are used. Some of them are your favorites. As you work with this book, you will find that part of every article is every other article mentioned in the cross references. The editors tried to make each article short enough to be read quickly. Instead of repeating ideas expressed somewhere else in the book, they have directed you to all the other places that will give you additional understanding. The truth of the Christian faith is so rich and meaningful that it is impossible to express it all in any one book. It is even impossible for any one peson to understand it all or to express what he believes in such a way that everyone else will agree with him. We have differences of opinion within our Episcopal Church, but by talking over those differences we learn from each other and move a little nearer eternal truth. This book makes no effort to convince anyone on any of the lesser points about which Churchmen differ. Its purpose is to present clearly the important things on which we agree." - from the Preface.
