Covers are very clean and intact except for slight darkening along spine, slight bumping to head and tail of spine, and almost imperceptible edge wear along bottom edges. A Fine copy. The author's first book. This is an autobiography by Frances Wilson Huard (1885-1969), an American author, translator, and lecturer who lived in France during World War I and World War II. She married Charles Huard, a French artist, in 1905. Charles provided illustrations for this autobiography as well as some of Frances's other works. In this memoir, Frances recounts her experiences while living at her summertime estate, Chateau de Villiers, located near Soissons, France and the Marne River, during WWI. The memoir appears to be approximately chronological, and Frances vividly describes the unfolding of events from the onset of the war to living in wartime France. Frances helped with the war effort by turning Villiers into a hospital. Sadly, Villiers was damaged by bombing during the war and became occupied by German soldiers. Frances helped raise funds for post-war relief by becoming a touring lecturer in the United States and Canada and selling etchings by Charles.
