First Edition
This well-produced Smithsonian Library volume presents a clear, accessible overview of evolutionary science by noted Smithsonian paleontologist Nicholas Hotton III. Issued as part of a mid-century educational series for general readers, the book synthesizes evolutionary theory, fossil evidence, and natural history in a richly illustrated format, featuring color plates, fossil photography, diagrams, and interpretive artwork. Highlights include discussions of Darwinian theory, adaptation, and environmental change, along with excerpts from Darwin's Voyage of the Beagle and a visual 'family tree of life.' A clean, attractive copy in Near Fine condition, bound in beige cloth with sharp corners, bright spine lettering, and a tight, square binding. The interior is crisp and unmarked throughout. The dust jacket is Very Good, showing light edge wear, minor creasing, and small chips at extremities, along with a short closed tear at the upper edge. The original $4.95 price remains intact on the front flap. A small original 'Smithsonian Museum Shop' price label is affixed to the rear panel, providing a modest but appealing piece of institutional provenance. Copyright page indicates 1968 publication by American Heritage Publishing Co., with no subsequent printings noted, consistent with a first edition. Library of Congress Card No. 68-24491 present. Published in association with the Smithsonian Institution, with trade distribution by D. Van Nostrand Company. The book forms part of The Smithsonian Library series, aimed at presenting scientific topics in an engaging, authoritative format for the general reader. Nicholas Hotton III (1922-1999) was a noted American paleontologist and curator at the Smithsonian Institution, specializing in fossil amphibians and reptiles. He contributed significantly to vertebrate paleontology and science education, combining scholarly research with accessible public writing. His work helped popularize evolutionary science during the mid-20th century, bridging academic research and general readership.
