The result, what spewed out, is a graphic, sometimes painfully explicit story centered around the sex life of a young girl (me!) who, among other things, started having sex at fourteen and stripping at fifteen. A story that basically can't be told because, in our rational and enlightened society, it is absolutely forbidden to write about underage persons and sex in the same sentence, let alone devote an entire book to it! This is because the studied, moral and political position of our society seems to be that people under a certain age should know absolutely nothing about sex. At all cost, they must be protected from such knowledge because (it is reasoned) their ignorance will not only keep them from entering puberty and having sexual feelings, it will also presumably keep them from getting pregnant or contracting AIDs. My goal in writing this, my raison d'etre, is to help others who may be going through what I went through. To show other troubled teenagers that they are not freaks; that they are not alone; that they can survive! But that's not gonna happen. Not bloody likely. At best, this is an adult story that will be proscribed even for adults and, if anybody is going to read this book, sadly, it will not be those who need it most. Whatever. --Anna M. Each describes her entanglement with an obsessive artist who considers his egotistical artistic "compulsions" to be license for his sadistic quest for the "perfect" subservient being. It is also not pornography. It contains too much soul-searching and heartfelt emotion and those seeking only sexual arousal or prurient titillation are likely to be disappointed. But most of all, it is not a simple one-dimensional story of good and evil, of abuser and abused, of predator and prey or even of master and slave. The slaves all write fearlessly, frankly and often critically of their master and come across as articulate, mostly confident and autonomous women who make their own decisions, including their choice of the collar and whip. Each seeks out and endures differing forms of pain, abuse and degradation for her own personal reasons. But the most unsettling point of all is that each endures her abuse willingly and of her own volition because each carries with her the key to her own shackles and her cell door is never locked! Hoersch writes with a brutal yet mostly compassionate sensitivity about the netherworld of sex, addicts, pimps, johns, prostitutes, dealers and various misfits. There is a pervading, transcendent hyper-realism and the voices of the people in his stories (I cannot call them "characters") are not easily dismissed or forgotten. His stories are graphic and frighteningly real because, unlike someone observing from the outside and inventing the details from whole cloth, Hoersch has lived and experienced every word that he writes. These remarkable stories fit no single genre. You can anticipate horror, explicit sex, descriptions of physical and emotional abuse, pain, degradation, drug addiction, prostitution, love, atonement, absolution, hate, forgiveness, desire, despair, religion, bondage, slavery, sado-masochism, and even humor.
