Hoppus was an early English surveyor who developed many techniques and skills for more accurate estimating of quantities required. His proposed unit "the Hoppus Cubic Foot" for estimating how much raw timber would be required for a specific volume of finished timber after processing and wastage, and was used in forestry until metrication (it was roughly 21% larger than a 'normal' cubic foot.There appear to be two John Smith versions, one from 1848 and one from 1861, each with identical pagination(WorldCat). There is no indication that this is a second impression or edition, so it assumed that it is the earlier version.

In the publisher's original blind-stamped cloth binding. Ink inscription to the front paste down. Stamps to the end papers, page 35, page 161 and the rear paste down. Lacking folding plate. Edward Hoppus was an English surveyor who introduced the Hoppus unit of measure. The hoppus measures the solid content and value of any piece of timber, stone, or other building material which is square or round. In this book, Hoppus uses tables to show the reader how to measure using this method, with a preface explaining the concept. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally sound, with bumping to the extremities and light wear to the joints. Cloth is lifting slightly to the head of the spine. Hinges are a little tender but still reasonably firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are clean but age toned. Very Good. book.
