Paperback. Condition: Fine. First Edition. A fine new copy. 64pp.This handsome small book tells the story of the Spalding Gentlemen's Society, one of the earliest such learned societies in Britain, founded by Maurice Johnson of Ayscoughfee Hall in 1710 and still in existence today. Nowadays the Society welcomes women as well as men, though in fact women were closely involved in the Society from the outset. It has a long and proud history in the life of this fenland town in Lincolnshire, especially in educational role, and is still providing opportunities for public engagement and academic research on a wide variety of subjects with the resources of its famous library and museum. Included here is also a mission statement on the Society's plans for the future. The book is lavishly illustrated with 16 pictures, mostly in colour. A feature of the wrapper is an extinct butterfly recorded in the Society's minutes.
