Sous-titre : On y a joint, la Mythologie, la Cosmogonie, les Fêtes & les Jeûnes des Gentous qui suivent le Shastah, & une Dissertation sur la Métempsychose, dont on attribue faussement le Dogme à Pythagore". L'ouvrage d'Holwell, traduit très rapidement en français et en allemand, est important, car il participe au discours sur l'Inde, qui s'est développé dans l'Europe philosophique du XVIIIe siècle. Hollwel a été en la matière une des sources de Voltaire. Chirurgien de la Cie Britannique des Indes Orientales (EIC), il est amené par ses séjours successifs et ses responsabilités à Calcutta (1741-1761) à collectionner des manuscrits indiens et arabes et à s'intéresser à l'histoire du Bengale et à la religion des "Gentoux" (les Hindous). Il est connu pour son récit du "black hole of Calcutta", prison où périrent bon nombre de britanniques lors de la chute de Fort William et la prise de Calcutta par le Nabab Siraj Ud Daulah. Petits accrocs en queue avec un mors légèrement fendillé, coins déformés, rousseurs sur les gardes blanches, galerie de vers au début de la seconde partie, complet de ses cartes et de ses planches en très bon état.
