Nearly fine in smoke-black linen with gilt embossed titles to the spine; in a nearly fine dust jacket with minor nicks to the shelf edges; original $3.95 price still intact to the front inner flap. Hofmann, a member of the faculty of Princeton Theological Seminary, did graduate work at Zurich, studied under Carl Jung, Jean Piaget, and Karl Barth. He also received advanced degrees at the Sorbonne in Paris where he became a colleague with Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone De Beauvoir, and Gabriel Marcel, gaining insights into existential philosophy. In this insightful and searching interpretation of Niebuhr's thought, Hofmann demonstrates a unity between a vision of modern society, human existence, and politics, and the principle ideas of Christianity. Niebuhr composed the serenity prayer recited by AA members, developed a philosophical perspective known as Christian realism, developed a philosophical perspective known as political realism, was one of the most respected American public intellectual, was dubbed 'the most influential theologian of the 20th century', and was awarded the Presidential Medal Of Freedom. Niebuhr's book NATURE AND DESTINY OF MAN is considered to be one of the best non-fiction books of the twentieth century. Nice and presentable. Octavo; 269 pages; notes; bibliography; index.
