Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 61 Color & 83 B/w Illustrations (illustrator). 1st Edition. Condition: Fine. 61 Color & 83 B/w Illustrations (illustrator). Book in fine condition; front cover; faint aging to clean interior pages; binding sound. This book makes available for the first time in paper- back a representative selection of David Hockney's work. Based on the phenomenally successful Abrams volume David Hockney by David Hockney, it offers di- verse and wide-ranging examples of the artist's work in every characteristic medium, from the early sketches and paintings to the recent innovative series in colored and pressed paper pulp. The pictures, carefully selected for their mastery of technique and medium, are arranged thematically. The 144 reproductions, 61 in full color, vibrantly por- tray a wide spectrum of subjects: still-lifes and objects, Egypt, curtains, showers, California, pools and water, people, travels, inventions, and set designs. These categories give us a unique glimpse into the artist's approach to his favorite concerns and the inventive ways in which he returns to them again and again. Citing David Hockney's "skill as a portraitist and illustrator, in defining character, telling stories, in cap- turing and monumentalizing fleeting moments, and in transforming the familiar into the exotic," Henry Geld- zahler, formerly Curator of Twentieth-Century Art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, found this extraordinarily talented British artist ever ready to explore and experiment and committed to producing a new and memorable vision. Those familiar with the liveliness, wit, and sensu- ousness of David Hockney's art will welcome Pictures by David Hockney as a fresh visit with an irrepressibly candid friend; those who are new to the Hockney oeuvre will recognize in its subtle pleasures the unmis- takable hand of a major talent. 144 illustrations, including 61 in full color.
