Framed by Vandevoorde, Paris. 407 x 505mm. sheet size. 311x 400 mm. image size wtihout text. From the series: Portraits of the Winning Horses of the Great St. Leger Stakes at Doncaster.,John Frederick Herring Sr. was an English sporting and equestrian painter. It is said that before becoming an artist, he drove a stagecoach. Whether or not this is true, it is evident from his paintings that he was deeply familiar with horses, their posture and personalities, and the specific details of their surroundings. He specialized in painting English thoroughbred racehorses and farmyard scenes such as these, and they were frequently made into prints. His son, J.F. Herring, Jr., continued the family tradition, painting similar horse and sporting scenes.Charles Hunt was a British engraver of horse and sporting subjects active during the 19th century. He came from a family of engravers and was noted for his fine engravings after Pollard, Alken, Herring and other painters working in the genre.Tooley, 261; Lane, British Racing Prints p.121; Mellon British Sporting and Animal Prints p.94; Siltzer pp. 145-147.
