This early printing of Commager's celebrated introduction to American history features striking two-tone illustrations by Leonard Everett Fisher and retains its original printed dust jacket. The jacket shows moderate toning, small edge chips, and a price…of $1.95 still present, while the cloth boards beneath are exceptionally clean and well-preserved. Internally, the volume is bright and unmarked aside from a neatly penned 1959 Christmas gift inscription to T. Lewis Smith from Mommy and Daddy, and a few faint handling marks consistent with gentle use. Fisher's dramatic endpapers reproduce the opening text of the Declaration of Independence, and the book's layout showcases his rich sepia and black artwork throughout. Structurally sound, the binding remains tight, with square corners and no loose pages. The text is clean, paper supple, and all illustrations vivid. Mild offsetting near the gutters and age-toning to edges reflect the book's mid-century production but do not detract from its overall presentation. The dust jacket, while toned, has protected the book exceptionally well, and remains complete with only shallow chipping along the spine ends.
