"A" Coy close to front, travels through "Death Valley" on Somme with 7 killed and 8 wounded, 10th September "under intense fire with many casualties"18th "no food, no overcoats!", ".Chappell & I lay wedged together at the bottom of the trench to keep warmth in our bodies." November 3rd "I now joined the Sniping Section". Christmas Day " we were working in the front line.", "5th Jan went with other Snipers for a course at Merville in a bowling alley. 9th Jan Snipers went to La Gorgue for training." " Left the Snipers" 20th January. "News of my Commission .Feb 4th. Summarises service from 5th Feb 1917 to 16 April 1921 some of which were with the Royal Engineers.
