Helen Hunt Jackson (1830- 18…85) was an American poet and writer and an activist on behalf of improved treatment of Native Americans. Ramona is a story of an orphan girl who was half Native American and half Scots. The plot deals with the struggles of herself and her Native American husband Alessandro, to find land of their own. The characters were based on people known by Jackson and incidents which she had encountered. Everett Gee Jackson (illustrator).
